I heart holiday weekends

What's not to love? Three days off. Stress-free relaxing. Finding out you get to move. Well, that last one isn't a standard holiday fare, but one that kicked this weekend off on a good note.

Dylan and I decided to ditch city life for one evening and go explore the nearby wilds of Vashon Island. Armed with a cooler, a dog, a tent, a tarp (due to constant showers), and some cards, we took the ferry from West Seattle to Vashon Island. After arrival, we headed inland and took to our new home at the AYH Ranch Hostel. The wait for the camp staff allowed us to explore the grounds, which included teepees and yurts and cabins and the like.

Without any mishaps, about an hour later, Dylan and I stood back to admire our crafty teamwork in the form of a pitched tent with a tarp underneath. After a nice nap, we decided to explore our area on a miniature hike that was thwarted by a patch of stinging neetles.

Oh, did I mention that our tent had a banana hammock? Oh yeah!

Well, maybe that wasn't it's sole intention, but it was handy nonetheless...

The rest of the evening was delightfully low key, involving several rounds of card games, wet trips to walk Freckles, making fun of the hippie drummer that had no rhythm, smelling the fires emitting from the nearby teepees, and lots of snacking.

Despite a minor setback in getting off the ferry in West Seattle (a team of four ferry workers attempted unsuccessfully and somewhat destructively to break into an old lady's car because she locked her keys inside), it was a fantastic getaway from the creature comforts of home.
